Q: Will I be able to undertake electrical work straight away after I complete the training?
A: Providing you successfully complete the necessary assessments there is no reason why you cannot begin electrical work upon completion of the course.
Q: I've heard it takes a long time to get your exam results?
A: Multiple choice exams provide instant results at the end of the exam. Written answer exams such as the City & Guilds 2391 require formal marking by the awarding body, this usually takes up to six weeks
Q: What happens if I fail any of my exams?
A: Dependant upon the examination type re-sit examinations can normally be arranged to take place within 1 week. City & Guilds written exams have nationally set dates, therefore the next date becomes your re-sit date.
Q: Can you cater for students with special needs?
A: Yes, but as with all special requirements that differ from the norm, please make us aware of your requirements and we will do our best to provide the appropriate support.
Q: Will I automatically become registered with one of the new Government approved competent persons schemes for 'part P' when the course is finished?
A: Our courses provide access to a range of different nationally recognised qualifications. It will be your own responsibility to join a scheme if you want to do domestic electrical work in the UK.
Q: Are the rules the same across the UK for work in domestic installations?
A: Generally the same technical standards apply across the UK. However membership requirements for the new domestic installer's schemes do vary in Scotland compared to England and Wales.
Q: "I'm getting on a bit" Is it like going back to school and will I feel out of place?
A: Not at all. A large percentage of our learners are mature students simply keeping up to date with current standards. Everybody is made to feel welcome in the centre
Q: What brands of PLC equipment are used on the course?
A: We offer training to all popular brands of PLC hardware using older Dos based or modern Windows applications.
Q: Will I be an electrician upon completion of a total electrical course?
A: Once you have completed a Total Electrical Course, you will have all the relevant qualifications to be a Domestic Electrical Installer
Q: When will I have to pay for the course?
A: All of our courses must be paid for two weeks prior to the course start date.
Q: How can I pay for my course?
A: We accept cheques, and all major credit and debit cards.
Q: Is there any financial assistance available to help fund training?
A: Yes, for information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact 0800 100 900.
Q: What accommodation is available?
A: There are a variety of hotels and B & B's in the area. There is a list available to assist you with booking your stay.
Q: What time does the course start and end?
A: We ask that you arrive at 9 o'clock each morning for registration, tea and coffee is available throughout the day and there is a break for lunch. Courses end at approximately half past four, except when exams are being held.
Q: Am I guaranteed work once I finish my training course?
A: We cannot guarantee work once you have completed your training, however we can offer short term placements to students who have attended a Total Electrical course with our own Electrical Contractors.
Q: I am a complete novice, is the Total Electrical Course right for me?
A: Yes, this course is designed for people from all backgrounds to build your electrical knowledge. Starting with the Basic Electrical Generic Module-Electrical Theory, we will guide you through to becoming a competent Domestic Electrical Installer.
Q: What do I need to bring with me?
A: Nothing, we provide everything you need whilst you are being trained. This includes documentation, tools and safety equipment. However a pen and a calculator you are familiar with would be handy.
Q: Will the total refrigeration course prepare me for work?
A: Yes, completing the 3 week course provides you with all of the skills you will need to install commission and maintain units in most environments.
Q: Do I need to purchase my own copy of the regulation books?
A: No we have a number of books that students can use for the duration of both the courses and exam. However, many students benefit from having their own publication for private study. See Resources.
