Certificate in Handling Refrigerants - City & Guilds 2078

RCH 001

Description

The City and Guilds 2078 certificate in handling refrigerants is aimed at anyone involved in the use, handling and disposal of refrigerants. The course is a mixture of both theory and practical elements culminating in both a written and a practical assessment. The candidate must complete both elements to achieve certification. This course does not cover the practical aspects of design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. These elements are covered in separate courses. The topics that are covered include the following and are put across in a relaxed way, with trainee interaction encouraged from the outset of the course. The assessor must observe each candidate performing the following practical activities:

  1. Select, check and use appropriate safety and personal protective equipment in use
  2. Identify type of refrigerant and its state (eg liquid or vapour)
  3. Identify condition of refrigerant (eg subcooled, saturated or superheated)
  4. Connect gauges, lines and charging apparatus with minimum contamination and loss to atmosphere and hazards to health and property (eg toxicity, flammability and combustibility)
  5. Charge low pressure side of the system with zeotropic blend in the liquid phase to correct charge level
  6. Remove gauges with minimum loss to atmosphere and hazards to health and property (eg toxicity, flammability and combustibility)
  7. Check and test for leaks and appropriate action taken if leakage is discovered
  8. Refit caps.
  9. Select and check appropriate recovery cylinder, to ensure its integrity and fitness for use prior to connection.
  10. Recover refrigerant from the system, until gauges read zero (atmospheric pressure)
  11. Disconnect gauges, lines, recovery equipment and cylinder, with minimum loss to atmosphere and hazards to health and property (eg toxicity, flammability and combustibility)
  12. Prepare cylinder for transportation in compliance with regulations
